Space Rider is an uncrewed robotic laboratory about the size of two minivans. After launch on Vega-C it will stay in low orbit for about two months. Experiments inside its cargo bay will allow technology demonstration and benefit research in pharmaceutics, biomedicine, biology and physical science. At the end of its mission, Space Rider will return to Earth with its payloads and land on a runway to be.
Space Rider
Space Rider is an ESA program withthe objective to provide Europe with an affordable, independent, reusable end-to-end integrated space transportation system for routineaccess and return from low orbit. It will be used to transport payloadsfor an array of applications, orbit altitudes and inclinations. 1)
Launched atop Vega-C, Space Riderfollows ESA’s IXV (Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle) missionwhich on 11 February 2015 performed a flawless suborbital flight withatmospheric reentry and sea landing.
June 2017: Although Europe’sSpace Rider reusable spaceplane is three years or so from its debut, the European Space Agency is already making plans to privatize theunmanned orbital vehicle. 2)- By 2025, ESA officials said, Space Rider could be operatingcommercially, flying science payloads and bringing them back to Earthfor roughly $40,000/kg. https://double-mostpoker-down-jf-blackjack.peatix.com. Arianespace, the Evry, France-based launchservices provider, would likely serve as Space Rider’s operator, offering industry and government customers the opportunity to fill thespaceplane 800 kg payload capacity with microgravity science, materialstesting, telecommunications and robotics demonstrations.
The Italian Aerospace ResearchCenter (CIRA) and Thales Alena Space manage ESA’s Space Riderproject as co-prime contractors. Lockheed Martin is contributing to thedesign work. Funding for the program’s design phase was approvedin December 2016 by ESA’s 22 member states.
A 2020 test flight would see SpaceRider launch atop Arianespace’s Vega-C rocket (which makes itsown debut in 2019) and land on a runway on one of the Atlantic’sAzores islands, Santa Maria. https://innovative-soft.mystrikingly.com/blog/defend-pangolin-eggs-mac-os.
During operational flights, SpaceRider will orbit 400 km above the Earth for a few months at the time, opening its payload bay doors to expose experiments to the spaceenvironment.
On 30 November 2017, TAS (ThalesAlenia Space) with ELV (European Launch Vehicle) as co-contractor, hassigned a contract with ESA for the engineering and preliminarydevelopment of the automated reusable Space Rider transportationsystem, designed for deployment by the new Vega-C light launcher intoLEO (Low Earth Orbit). 3)
Featuring a lifting bodyconfiguration, Space Rider is designed as a free-flying orbitalplatform, capable of remaining two months in orbit, safely reenteringthe atmosphere and landing. It can be recovered along with its payload, refurbished, and reused for up to six missions. It combines thecharacteristics of a space system designed for scientific experimentsin low Earth orbit with those needed for guidance outside theatmosphere and through an automated landing, including microgravityexperiments, in-orbit validations, testing of science and explorationtechnologies, etc., plus payload recovery on the ground for examinationand retesting.
Leading a consortium of Europeanmanufacturers, research centers and universities, Thales Alenia Spaceis responsible for the development of the reentry module (RM), derivedfrom the IXV. ELV is in charge of the development of the servicemodule, derived from the Vega-C upper stage AVUM (Attitude and VernierUpper Module). The partners in this new program are capitalizing on thelessons learned from the IXV, which enjoyed strong support from theItalian space agency ASI.

Space Rider Mac Os Update
• June 5, 2019: Initiallyproposed in 2016, ESA’s Space Rider reentry vehicle provides areturn to Earth and landing capability that compliments the existinglaunch options of the Ariane and Vega families. 4)
- Having recently completed systemand subsystem preliminary design reviews, Space Rider is advancingquickly towards the CDR (Critical Design Review) at the end of 2019.
- Launched on Vega-C, Space Riderwill serve as an uncrewed high-tech space laboratory operating forperiods longer than two months in low orbit. It will then re-enter theEarth's atmosphere and land, returning its valuable payload to eagerengineers and scientists at the landing site. After minimalrefurbishment it will be ready for its next mission with new payloadsand a new mission.
- Space Rider combines reusability,in-orbit operations and transportation, and precise descent of areentry vehicle able to safely traverse and land close to inhabitedzones. These are major developments, set to extend European knowhowacross a host of applications allowing industry to open up new markets.
- Up to 800 kg of payloads can fitinside Space Rider's environmentally controlled cargo bay that offers1200 liters of payload volume and provides services including 600 W ofpower along with thermal, control,>- The Space Rider system is an adaptation of both Vega-C’s AVUM+ stage, and ESA’s Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV) which flew a flawless mission in 2015.
- The knowledge gained from thesedevelopments is being used to ensure a short development schedule andcosts per kilogram of payload that are compatible with the evolvingglobal space market.
- The upper stage AVUM+ is enhancedwith an AVUM Life Extension kit that will be Space Rider's servicemodule providing power, attitude control and deorbit capability formissions typically lasting two months or more.
- Space Rider builds on IXV, nowfeaturing an added multi-purpose cargo bay, landing gear, and anupgraded design to guarantee reusability for an additional fiveflights.

- To minimize costs, commercial offthe shelf components are used whenever possible, and expensive elementswill be reused. After each mission, the vehicle will require onlyminimal refurbishment, making this vehicle competitive in the market.
- New features include sophisticatedavionics for maneuvering in space, deorbiting, and a smooth ride backto Earth with a soft precision landing on the ground.

- Plans are evolving for theidentification among different options available of the first Europeanspaceports for Space Rider landings involving operations, technicalproviders and new legislation.
- “Space Rider isEurope’s first reusable space transportation vehicle. Thisfascinating challenge is honing our skills in a range of cutting-edgetechnologies and this will strengthen our position in this competitivemarket,” commented Jose Longo, ESA’s Space RiderDevelopment Program Manager.
- Giorgio Tumino, ESA's Vega andSpace Rider Development Programs Manager added: 'Space Rider providesthe European Vega Space Transportation System with the uniqueopportunity to complement today's capability to access space, with thecapabilities to operate and return payloads from space for a variety ofin-space applications, in a competitive manner with respect to anyalternative solution. These capabilities enable Europe to capture newpromising markets as is indicated by the extraordinarily enthusiasticfeedback received from potential end users attending our workshops andresponding to ESA's announcements of opportunities on Space Rider.'
Launch: Space Rider will be launched from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, in 2022.
