Combo Boxes

A combo box combines a text field with a pull-down button in a single control. The user can enter a custom value into the field or click the button to choose from a list of predefined values. When the user enters a custom value, it’s not added to the list of choices.

Populate the field with a meaningful default value from the list. Although the field can be empty by default, it’s best when the default value alludes to the hidden choices. The default value doesn’t have to be the first item in the list.

Use an introductory label to let the user know what types of items to expect. Generally, labels should use title-style capitalization and end with a colon. For related guidance, see Labels.

Provide relevant choices. Users appreciate being able to enter a custom value, but also appreciate the convenience of choosing from a list of the most likely choices.

Offer standalone choices.https://dictionary-software.mystrikingly.com/blog/spikewall-mac-os. Combo boxes don’t allow multiple selections; the user can only choose a single value from the list.

Make sure list items aren’t wider than the text field. If an item is too wide, it can be truncated and hard to read.

The Mac OS X login screen can be customized in System Preferences under Users & Groups > Login Options. One of the options here allows for the login screen to display either a list of users or a name and a password field. When set to a list of users, all available accounts will be graphically listed to be selected from:

In the environment I work, some computers have hidden accounts that don’t show up in this list view. Therefore someone can be caught off guard if they need to log in to a hidden account and the login screen is set to list view.

Luckily there’s a simple trick to force the name and password fields to show while using a list view login screen:

  1. Step 1 for macOS 10.14 Mojave and prior: Press the down arrow on the keyboard to highlight any user (make sure the password entry box is NOT open)
  2. Press Option + Return on the keyboard

The name and password boxes will appear which then allow a specific username to be entered:
